Avnita, Kanika and Tanvi participated in a school activity where they had to interact with Akkas (the female helping staff of the school) and write a story on their lives. Post the activity, when the trio showed the stories to the Akkas, they realized that they couldn’t read it as the stories were in English. The incident left an indelible impression on their minds and this led them to start ’empoWer’, an initiative where the Akkas of the school were taught by students to initiate their comprehension of English. The ‘empoWer’ team now has 13 Akkas enrolled into their program ‘TeachpoWer’, where lessons are taught with the help of songs, games and relatable rhymes. The award money helped the team buy books, stationery and associated course material for their Akkas.
